Venturing Crews 32 And 44 Work Overtime In The New River Gorge

Adventures In Service: Venturing To The Summit, Part 4

You’ve already seen Venturing Crews 32 and 44 from North Carolina help restore some of the natural habitat near the Gauley River National Recreation Area. And you’ve seen their fishing and whitewater adventures on the New River. But they aren’t done yet!

In this installment of Adventures in Service, Venturing to the Summit, see the Venturers help Gene Kistler, owner of the local climbing shop, as he plans out a new course for a trail to the Junkyard Wall, one of the most popular rock climbing sites in the gorge.

The New River Gorge is home to over 1,600 climbing routes that vary in difficulty from easy to really, really, insanely hard. Climbers from all over the country are familiar with the area, and many a climber has camped out for extended periods just to try their skill at the famous New River sandstone.

All that use leads to a lot of maintenance work, and the locals in the area who take it upon themselves to work with the National Park Service as volunteers often look for help. This time, that help came in the form of the good ol’ BSA when our Venturing Crews stepped up.

Check out the video above to see how the crews helped out!

I’m with an OA group that is interested in doing service work like this over this coming summer, 2012. Where can I get more info and who can I contact?

Hi Luke. There are currently no service projects for the Summit planned for 2012. Keep checking here for updates, though, and thanks for your interest.
